This morning Admiral Mohab Mameesh, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority and Suez Canal economic zone, and General Lieutenant Kamel El Wazir, President of the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces, together with the senior leaders of the two committees witnessed the arrival of the first cargo ship on the new berth in the port of East Port Said. This marks the start of the operation of the new berths handed over to the Suez Canal Economic Zone by the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces.
Admiral Mohab Mameesh said that the reception of the new berths for salt exportation came after several national companies working in the field of salt exportation to the European market and to the USA requested to export salt ores from the East Port Said port according to on-going contracts. This come after a period of arrest of exportation of the salt ores that is extracted from many sites in East Port Said in order to maintain the market for Egyptian goods abroad and boost national economy.
Admiral Mohab Mameesh added that the economic zone had received the new berths last October with a total length of 5 kilometres; they were constructed by Egyptian companies and craftsmanship under the supervision of the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces who committed to the timetable set for implementation.
Mameesh expressed his content at the operation of the new berths with the arrival of vessels and the providing maritime services to the vessels after anchoring. He pointed out that what was witnessed today on the new port is an indication of its readiness and the competitiveness of the East Port Said port.
The Admiral assured that the East Port Said region is considered one of the most important on the banks of Suez Canal, with a total surface area of more than a hundred square kilometres. This was one of the main reasons that the political leadership had chosen the port to announce the inauguration of the Suez Canal Economic Zone on November 28th of 2015. He indicated that the Economic Authority strengthened the competitiveness of the port making it one of the best not only in the Middle East but across the entire Mediterranean.
The East Port Said port is ranked internationally among the top 50 ports in terms of efficiency, performance, the size of the goods and the volume of cargo and containers handled by it and through the operation of the new berths today. The Authority is seeking to raise its status and international rank. The incentive decisions and recent cuts issued mid last year contributes to attracting and returning international shipping lines to the port.
The admiral noted the keenness of the Economic Authority to developing the port of East Port Said through the construction of new berths with a length of 5 kilometres thus expanding the berth to 200%. The Authority also exploited an area of land of around 14 square kilometres, Resolution 330 for 2015, and water surface of 16 square kilometres.
The development and area utilisation is part of the plan for a logistic area in the port over an area of 4.8 square kilometres, with plans for the construction of new berths over a length of 5 kilometres and a depth of 22 meters thus meeting the demands of the world’s giant vessels. This will total the berth length to 12.4 kilometres.
It is worth mentioning that the area of the port of East Port Said was only 1.2 square kilometres, which included the current container terminal at the port, operated by the Suez Canal Container Company, with a length of 2.4 kilometres.
The Economic Authority has made great strides in re-exploitation the area of 8 square kilometres of the total land area by signing contracts with Egyptian and international companies to operate these areas. This area represents the background area of the first phase that is now 100% complete.
Admiral Mohab Mameesh recently announced the signing of a contract with Sesco Trans for the operation of the new berths. The French Bollore was also contracted to set up a car dealership station to be the centre of distribution in the area.
